A life-sized model of a right-whale fluke was designed and manufactured to the specifications set forth by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) large-whale disentanglement team. The fluke has skin-like characteristics, floats, and is engineered to be towed behind a boat either on the surface or submerged. It is used to simulate entanglement scenarios and practice procedures during training for response to whales entangled in fishing gear.
